What better way to celebrate Christmas than zip lining? We headed to Hilo, an area on the other side of the big island. It was pretty dead because of Christmas, but we explored some local markets and looked in some windows of closed shops. We arrived at the zip lining place pretty early, so we did this for a while, but finally it was time to drive up to the lines.
It was a very bumpy van ride up to the top, and it lasted a little more than twenty minutes. It was honestly the scariest part of the whole adventure! There were eight zip lines at the top, and they got longer as they went on. There were three warm up ones at the beginning, and the fourth one was was crazy long and had a beautiful view of a waterfall. I was feeling brave, so I even got my phone out and recorded this one and got a nice shot of the waterfall and Emily behind me. There was a quick break with some fresh fruit and water and then we headed to the final four lines.
These were even crazier, but by this time it wasn't as scary, which is probably how it's designed. On the way back, we saw some sleeping grass, which was really cool. If you touched its leaves, it would curl into itself and "go to sleep." Then came the bumpy van ride down, and that was pretty much the day! We headed back to our resort area and had dinner at Lava Lava Beach Club, which was this fun outdoorsy place to eat.
I'm feeling ambitious, so I'm going to try and fit in the next day, as well! After the volcano and zip line days, this day was much more chill. We slept later and had lunch at this vegan place, which was amazing! All of the dishes were very punny- I got the fungus humungus.
After eating, we headed over to see some petroglyphs on a nearby nature trail. These are old, simple drawings similar to cave paintings. Not much is known about them besides the fact that they were drawn by ancient Hawaiians. This walk was even more of an example of the diverse climate, as the trail was very dry and dusty, but beautiful all the same.
We hung by the pool in the afternoon, and then went to an asian place for dinner. It was a great two days, and I hope I didn't try to jam too much in one post!
