Christmas Eve is here, so that means it's time for a visit to Volcanoes National Park! We woke up a little earlier because we were in for a two hour drive across the island. After the ride, we finally arrived at the huge national park. The first thing we saw was this huge, smoking crater, where the lava originally flowed from. All over the Big Island, by the way, there is black lava rock covering the ground. It's like the island's dirt, so it was cool to see where some of it originally spewed from.
After that, we went on a little trail to see some different heat vents. You could see the steam coming from the ground and it would get really warm when you got close. Again, it wasn't the nicest weather, so the Sussmans all had their raincoats on. But we did get pretty lucky! There was almost no rain while we were outside hiking. We stopped at a restaurant for a late lunch. This place was actually in the park, so we didn't have to leave and come back. I ordered a Hawaiian pizza (because what better time!?) and we enjoyed our view before moving on.
The next thing we did was explore some of the trails that went through the old lava tubes. This was awesome, and it just went to show how diverse the climate is here. Everything was so lush and covered in green, which was crazy because all we saw on the car ride there was pretty much black lava rock. We got in the car again to see the edge of the National Park on the coast, and Emily and I proceeded to have a photo shoot among the lava rock. It's crazy what it can do, as the lava actually formed an arch in the water, and you could see the old road that the lava destroyed.
Well, I don't think I can say the word "lava" again, so I'll end the post here. Check back soon for some zip lining fun!!
