9. American Horror Story (Top 10 of 2014)

American Horror Story (FX)

First of all, let's credit AHS for basically creating a genre. They made watching miniseries an actual thing, and inspired other similar concepts, like True Detective, which I haven't gotten around to yet, and Fargo, which I absolutely love. However, AHS edged out Fargo for a spot on this list and here's why.
2014 saw two unique iterations of the series. In January we watched the final few episodes of Coven, and since October we've been obsessing over Freak Show. Each year, creator Ryan Murphy and his team pick a classic horror setting and create out-of-the-box stories with a beginning and end. He uses a similar cast of actors each season, with Jessica Lange, Evan Peters, Sarah Paulson, and Lily Rabe appearing in all four.

I remember freaking out trying to guess who the "supreme" witch of the next generation would be at the end of Coven, and those final episodes were definitely not a disappointment, especially with those Stevie Nicks cameos. Plus, Kathy Bates won an Emmy doing this:

And then came the very highly anticipated Freak Show. Definitely had the best promos yet, and although its first few episodes were a little slow, more recent episodes have really picked up the pace, thanks to characters like Dandy played by newcomer Finn Wittrock. Freak Show continues to make unconventional choices like killing off main characters (RIP Twisty) and actually connecting the seasons (talk about that Pepper episode!) The huge ensemble of talented actors and the gorgeous circus sets don't hurt either. I can't wait to see how this one finishes up. For now, let's recall that time when creepily attractive Dandy bathed in his mother's blood after murdering her. Ah, the memories!
