Top 10 of 2014 - Honorable Mentions

I haven't seen/heard/consumed nearly enough pop culture this year to make individual top 10 lists for film, TV, music, etc, so I decided I would create an all encompassing top 10 list of everything entertainment, with each post highlighting a different selection! I'd like to start with some honorable mentions that didn't quite make the Top 10.

(Suggested music while scrolling through these-- enjoy DJ Earworm's annual mashup of 2014, highlighting the year's most popular songs, some that you may see later in the countdown!)

Modern Family (ABC)
Some may say the comedy is past its time, but ModFam continues to be HILARIOUS in its current season 6. As the younger generation of the show grows older, we get even more to explore (see: Haley's 21st birthday episode and the increasingly sassy lines from Lily). And of course, 2014 brought us the long-awaited proposal and wedding between Mitch and Cam.

Pippin
While technically Pippin was revived on Broadway in 2013, it continued to be great in 2014. I was lucky enough to see Patina Miller's tony-award winning performance as Leading Player back in January. The musical is both a spectacle with its new circus theme, as well as having some surprisingly dark turns in the second act. Hurry and see this one before it closes next week!

Boyhood
Richard Linklater's incredible movie filmed over eleven years was original, but it wasn't just a gimmick. The movie felt long, but for good reasons, as we watched our protagonist Mason grow up. Patricia Arquette, on the other hand, kept the film grounded with her constant characterization as Olivia.

In the Lonely Hour by Sam Smith
Sam Smith's debut single "Stay With Me" was familiar, but it also brought some new perspective to pop music. Ever since I watched his performance on SNL I fell in love with his voice, which is why I enjoy listening to his entire album so much. Personal favorite tracks include his not-as-popular singles "I'm Not the Only One," "Like I Can," and "Money On My Mind".

Buzzfeed
Buzzfeed.com only keeps growing, but outside of my typical social media visits, it definitely was my favorite website of 2014. Their original videos were short, sweet, funny, and informative this year. And of couse, there are fun, picture-filled "articles" as well as some cool in-depth pieces (you just have to look for them, I swear!). Plus, they remain the champs for picking the perfect GIF for each moment.

How to Get Away with Murder (ABC)
#TGIT !! (That's "Thank God It's Thursday" for those unfamiliar with the ABC promos). Executive producer Shonda Rhimes did it again with this Viola Davis drama by presenting vital pieces of information from the night of the titular murder in flash forwards. Dare I say, I enjoyed this show more than it's predecessor Scandal in 2014, but both shows did have me texting/tweeting "Oh My GAWM!"

Godzilla
I don't know what it was, but this summer reboot of the classic franchise got me absolutely fascinated with the Godzilla universe. The king of monsters deserved this special effects appropriate update, even if it wasn't super high quality filmmaking. Bonus props to the best marketing team of 2014 who had us believing that Bryan Cranston was actually going to be the main character up against our big guy. But hey, you have to admit that final battle was pretty freaking awesome.
