Because why not? Oscar nominations are announced tomorrow morning (eeeee!) and here are my predictions! Now with updated results in green! Overall, it's pretty upsetting that all of the Best Picture nominated films are starring men, and all twenty acting nominees are white. This little diversity is upsetting, but rather than take it out on the Academy, let's get some more diverse roles in Hollywood, shall we? ANYWAYS, let's see what I got right and wrong! Overall, I was about 70% accurate.
(credit to GoldDerby.com for ideas; I'm pretty much editing their rankings)
Let's go category by category, with each list in order of their likeliness for noms.
Best Picture
Boyhood
Birdman
The Imitation Game
Selma
The Theory of Everything
The Grand Budapest Hotel
Whiplash
Gone Girl
Nightcrawler
7/8- I missed American Sniper, while Gone Girl and Nightcrawler, my predictions with a lower chance missed the cut.
Best Director
Richard Linklater (Boyhood)
Alejandro G. Inarritu (Birdman)
Wes Anderson (The Grand Budapest Hotel)
Ava DuVernay (Selma)
Damien Chazelle (Whiplash)
3/5- I missed Bennet Miller for Foxcatcher and Morten Tyldum for The Imitation Game, and Ava Duvernay, who would have been the first black female to be nominated, was snubbed along with Damien Chazelle.
Best Actor
Michael Keaton (Birdman)
Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything)
Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game)
David Oleyowo (Selma)
Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler)
3/5- Oleyowo and Gyllenhaal were snubbed, while Steve Carrell of Foxcatcher made it in as well as Bradley Cooper from American Sniper, giving him a lead actor nom three years in a row!
Best Actress
Julianne Moore (Still Alice)
Reese Witherspoon (Wild)
Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything)
Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl)
Amy Adams (Big Eyes)
4/5- Take out Amy Adams and add Marion Cotillard for Two Days, One Night.
Best Supporting Actor
J.K. Simmons (Whiplash)
Edward Norton (Birdman)
Ethan Hawke (Boyhood)
Robert Duvall (Foxcatcher)
Mark Ruffalo (Foxcatcher)
5/5 - Woo!
Best Supporting Actress
Patricia Arquette (Boyhood)
Meryl Streep (Into the Woods)
Emma Stone (Birdman)
Keira Knightley (The Imitation Game)
Rene Russo (Nightcrawler)
4/5 - I was pleasantly surprised when Laura Dern got in for her performance in Wild! Rene Russo didn't make the top five.
Best Original Screenplay
Boyhood
Birdman
The Grand Budapest Hotel
Nightcrawler
Selma
4/5- Foxcatcher instead of Selma.
Best Adapted Screenplay
The Imitation Game
Whiplash
Gone Girl
Wild
The Theory of Everything
3/5- I failed to predict American Sniper and Inherent Vice, and sadly the two efforts involving women, Wild and Gone Girl were snubbed.
Best Animated Film
The Lego Movie
How to Train Your Dragon 2
Big Hero 6
The Boxtrolls
Song of the Sea
4/5- While I figured that one of the indie animated films from GKIDS would be nominated (Song of the Sea), I didn't guess the other one as well, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya. That film was nominated in place of the amazingly creative The Lego Movie, resulting in the saddest snub of all.
Best Foreign Film
Leviathan
Ida
Force Majeure
Timbuktu
Tangerines
4/5- Instead of frontrunner Force Majeure, Wild Tales made it in.
Best Documentary Feature
Citizenfour
Life Itself
Virunga
The Case Against 8
Last Days in Vietnam
3/5- Yet another frontrunner, Life Itself, was snubbed, as well as the Prop 8 doc The Case Against 8. In its place? Finding Vivian Maier and The Salt of the Earth.
Best Cinematography
Birdman
Interstellar
Gone Girl
The Grand Budapest Hotel
Mr. Turner
3/5- I missed Ida and Unbroken, and Interstellar missed this category as well as Gone Girl.
Best Costume Design
Into the Woods
The Grand Budapest Hotel
The Imitation Game
Belle
Mr. Turner
3/5- Maleficent and Inherent Vice made the cut instead of Belle and The Imitation Game.
Best Editing
Gone Girl
The Imitation Game
Boyhood
Birdman
Whiplash
3/5- Birdman was tragically looked over, and the Gone Girl snubs continue. Instead, American Sniper and The Grand Budapest Hotel, two movies that the Academy clearly likes more than anyone anticipated.
Best Makeup and Hairstyling
Guardians of the Galaxy
The Theory of Everything
Foxcatcher
2/3- The Grand Budapest Hotel instead of The Theory of Everything.
Best Production Design
The Grand Budapest Hotel
Into the Woods
Maleficent
Interstellar
The Imitation Game
4/5- Mr. Turner instead of Maleficent.
Best Score
The Theory of Everything
Gone Girl
The Imitation Game
Interstellar
How to Train Your Dragon 2
3/5- Alexadre Desplat adds to his Imitation Game nod with a Grand Budapest Hotel one, and Mr. Turner sneaked in for a nom, as well. The amazing Gone Girl score was snubbed, as was How To Train Your Dragon 2.
Best Song
Glory (Selma)
Big Eyes (Big Eyes)
Mercy Is (Noah)
Everything Is Awesome (The Lego Movie)
Yellow Flicker Beat (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay-- Part 1)
2/5- My lowest score! This category can be unpredictable. Biggers names Lana Del Rey ("Big Eyes"), Lorde ("Yellow Flicker Beat"), and Patti Smith ("Mercy Is") were looked over in favor of "Lost Stars" from Begin Again, "Grateful" from Beyond the Lights, and "I'm Not Gonna Miss You" from Glen Campbell... I'll Be Me.
Best Sound Editing
Interstellar
Guardians of the Galaxy
Whiplash
American Sniper
Birdman
3/5- Unbroken made it in, as well as the only nomination for The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. Guardians of the Galaxy and Whiplash didn't make the cut.
Best Sound Mixing
Interstellar
Guardians of the Galaxy
Into the Woods
Whiplash
American Sniper
3/5- Again, Guardians of the Galaxy didn't make it, and Into the Woods didn't either. Add in Unbroken and Birdman.
Best Visual Effects
Interstellar
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
Guardians of the Galaxy
The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
4/5- X-Men: Days of Future Past instead of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies.
