8. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay-- Part 1 (Top 10 of 2014)

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay-- Part 1

Yeah, the folks behind the enormously popular Hunger Games franchise decided to split the final movie into two. This started with Harry Potter and it seemed that everyone followed suit, like Twilight, Divergent, and The Hobbit. Yes, it's a clear grab for more money, but it seems that it only pleases fans of the original material. As someone who read the Hunger Games books, I was one of those people.

Although the film didn't feel like your average movie with a beginning, middle, and end, it was still a very worthy entry to the franchise, so much so that it made my list! Francis Lawrence, director of this installment as well as the previous Catching Fire was a perfect choice to helm the remaining films. The movie remained very faithful to the book, but also added in things that really advanced it.

After Anna Kendrick's "Cups" got so big after Pitch Perfect, it was a good move making J-Law sing "The Hanging Tree" in Mockingjay. And hey, we got that inevitable dance remix on the radio to show for it. Speaking of J-Law, she continued to be America's favorite celebrity this year, thanks a lot to Mockingjay. Her acting of course, was up to par, and Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth did some of their best work on the franchise, as well.

Not to mention Julianne Moore's President Coin, probably my favorite part of the whole film. She was one of the year's best casting choices and she was perfect as the president of District 13. Another good choice? Making Elizabeth Banks' Effie Trinket a much bigger role, stripping down her capitol glamour but keeping her personality. I couldn't be more excited for the final movie next fall!
