Last night was my personal Super Bowl of the year: it was Oscar night! Here are some highlights/thoughts/quick takes.
Feminism
I was a big fan of the #AskHerMore trend, and did realize that it was taken into account when posing interview questions. I was a bigger fan of Patricia Arquette's movement for equal pay and Meryl and J-Lo's response.
Neil Patrick Harris
NPH, as predicted, did a great job hosting. I always think the best hosts make jokes as the show goes on about what happens. Harris thought on his feet, delivered a great opening number, showed us his bod, and bugged us with that predictions thing (even though the jokes at the end were pretty funny).
Alexandre Desplat
YAY!! My personal favorite win of the night. Delivering great soundtracks year after year, Desplat has been nominated eight times, two of which were this year, and he finally won for his inventive work on The Grand Budapest Hotel.
Selma
Wow, I feel really bad for seeing American Sniper on MLK day. Gotta see this one as well as Whiplash and Foxcatcher.
The "Birdman" spoof
Great work by NPH in paying tribute to the best picture winner! Although it annoys me that some people think it was a "haha Neil Patrick Harris is naked" joke instead of a "haha Birdman and Whiplash" joke. Also, it's worth repeating: his bod.
The performances
Quick ranking-
8. Tim McGraw - "I'm Not Gonna Miss You": He sounded fine, but definitely a slow moment in a long show.
7. Maroon 5 - "Lost Stars": Although this was my favorite Oscar nominated song this year, it felt rushed and awkward that everyone but Adam Levine was in the dark.
6. Rita Ora - "Grateful": She actually sounded great, and I enjoyed the song as well! Only a bit boring.
5. Lady Gaga - "The Sound of Music" medley: This put Gaga haters to shame as she sounded amazing and showed her talent to lend her voice to different styles.
4. Tegan & Sara feat. The Lonely Island - "Everything is Awesome": This was just the thing to show before the kids went to bed. Also, Oprah with the Lego oscar.
3. Jennifer Hudson - "I Can't Let Go": YAAS, she actually just did a song from Smash. And it was flawless.
2. John Legend & Common - "Glory": Most inspirational performance, and setting itself up for a win.
1. Neil Patrick Harris, Anna Kendrick, and Jack Black - Opening: The number penned by the writers of "Let It Go" was perfect, and just the right amount of musical theater, the host going into movie clips, and special guests!
Eddie Redmayne
A lot of people were rooting for Michael Keaton for the "career oscar", and he was very talented in Birdman, but not all of those people saw Redmayne's amazing work in The Theory of Everything. He tracked the downfall of Stephen Hawking's body, even though it was filmed out of order, and did so much with just his eyes. And he's such a cutie!!
Boyhood/Birdman
Although it would have been nice to honor Richard Linklater's directorial effort for Boyhood, Birdman was my favorite film that I've seen. Also, shout out to the win for every single best picture nominee, the first time that has happened since the field expanded to 10 five years ago.
Octavia Spencer
She was tormented all night for that predictions bit, and then when she presented, they played a song from... Dreamgirls? That was awkward. Maybe Mary J. Blige's song from The Help would have been better.
